In just nine short months iPhone and iPod Touch users have downloaded 1 billion applications (that’s 1 0000 000 000 zero’s). More important that the actual number is the pace at which it was accomplished.
The figure has blown away the number the app store developers predicted and may end up being a turning point for the gaming industry. Developers who have not already recognized the iPhone and iPod Touch as legitimate gaming platforms, could join on the bandwagon which could cause a massive snowball effect in new games coming to the platform.
Other possible outcomes could include:
An improved app store with a better cataloging system, new pricing models for apps being sold – such as in app/game purchases of new or extra content. The big two, Sony and Nintendo could take note and develop deeper app stores of their own in a bid to lure some of Apple’s deep pocketed customers.

1 billion is a huge number, but most of those apps came from iPod touches as there are roughly 16 million iPod Touches out there and only a few million iPhones. However, in a year or so that number could definetly be reveresed as Apple continues to gain ground on the smart phone market.
A good point and I find it interesting that so many of these apps are being run on iPod Touches. This means that the Touch was bought specifically for the apps and of course the iPod functionality but the point is that its purchase can be viewed as a console purchase, much the same as going out and buying a Nintendo DS.
