South Africa are soccer crazed at the moment with the 2010 Fifa World Cup less than a year away. Last weekend, Johannesburg otherwise known as Egoli – the city of gold hosted the Fifa interactive World Cup 2009 where more than 500 players turned up for their chance at sporting glory at the Sandton Fountain court. We have included pictures a gallery below.
Gordan Butler, aka “Flash” Gordan, after a close penalty shootout in Round 63 went on to fight his way through the remaining contestants and beat Mubeen Gaffoor 3-1 in a dramatic final showdown to lay his hands on the virtual World Cup Trophy. The 31 year old had this to say:
“I was so close to going out before reaching the final 64 and just thought I had nothing to lose as the rounds went on. I am shaking now and can’t believe I have won! I can’t wait to now go to Barcelona and will definitely give it my best shot.”
Gorden will fly to Barcelona on May 2nd to compete in the FIWC09 Grand Final where he will represent South Africa against the other 20 competing countries.
The event was held over three days and had a total of 500 players. Celebrity attendees included: Shaun Bartlett and Andre Arendse as well as the delightful boxing champion ‘Baby Jake’ Matlala. The FIWC is the world’s largest football gaming tournament with 4641 players competing in 20 countries.
Interesting tit-bits about the event are that there was R600 000 worth of equipment used, which includes the Plastations 3’s, the Sony Bravia TV’s and the other tech that made the event possible. The total cost was just over R1 000 000 which was footed by the three sponsors; Fifa, Ster-Kinekor and of course EA Games.
Amazingly there was not one yellow or red card given throughout the quarter and semi-finals which was a fine display of clean football and we commend all the players for a job well done. Almost all of the major regions of South Africa where represented at the tournament with players from Cape Town, Durban all the way through to Johannesburg and Pretoria.
“Flash” Gorden , we wish you the best of luch in Barcelona.
