Should Classics Games be Revisited or Left to Rest in Peace?

With the upcoming release of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena – which contains a total remake of Riddick`s original outing in Escape from Butcher Bay - Outrun’s revival on PSN and XBLA and the popularity of Sega’s Megadrive Ultimate Collection providing a nice thick slice of gaming nostalgia, CuriousOnion can’t help but wonder which games you would love to see remade and brought kicking and screaming onto current generation consoles.
I for one am old enough to remember spending many hours utterly engrossed in Ian Bell and David Braben’s space trading epic Elite on my Amstrad CPC-464. Sure, by today’s standards the graphics were dire but back then gameplay was king and Elite had it by the cargo-ship full. Couple the absorbing gameplay with today’s hi-def graphics and I for one would be at the front of the queue.
Another game I enjoyed immensely was Final Fantasy VII on the original PlayStation and I`m not alone in wishing Square Enix would remake their classic for the current generation. It was fantastic revisiting the world of Cloud, Aeris and Sephiroth in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children on the PSP last year but as this petition shows – currently at 52585 signatures – a full remake is rightfully at the top of many people’s wish list.
So, should classic games stay locked in our past, to be revisited only through emulators and rose tinted glasses? If not, which games would you like to see make a comeback on today’s powerful behemoths?

mmmm I think the same as I do for all these remakes of films that have been made over the last few years… just leave it be. Every time I hear on the telly or read about a “new” remake film I just think why bother you lazy gits! Make a new film!
To me it just smacks of a lake of imagination, surely you can think of something new rather than just re hashing an old game. I think that making a new episode or part of a games series is a good idea though.
I would love to see some of the oldies make a comeback, even if it is a HD remake sold on the PSN or XBL.
One of my favorite games on PC was The Dig – by Lucasarts, that and Gabriel Knight, I would love to see these games remade so that I could sink my imagination into them and be completely and utterly engaged once again.
