There are many games out there where you play a character in a game but there are very few where you want to be the very character that you are playing. Xmen Origin: Wolverine is some of the most savage fun I’ve had on a long time. The game is a certified outlet for the animal within and if you never wanted a set of adamantium claws, you will soon after you begin playing.

This is the most violent, gory and temper satisfying superhero game that I’ve seen yet. It will provide you with a new understanding of the calamitous damage that indestructible, supremely sharp claws can do to the human body, steel and concrete. It will pit you against hoards of humans, fellow mutants, robots and machines that will all feebly fall  at your fury.

While the game does not bring anything new to the third-person action genre it does take the genre’s best aspects and combines them to form what is arguably the best movie based game to ever hit our consoles. Its is filled with many adrenalin inducing cinematic sequences, one of which is Wolverines forward summersault from the nose of a flying helicopter to its windshield, only just barely missing the blades and after he ejects the pilot in a tear of blood, he leaps down to the next helicopter that to its detriment, fails to avoid him.

Wolverine has a wide variety of attacks at his disposal most of which end with the enemy’s body parts spread out in bits and pieces across the room. Logan can decapitate, disembowel and impale his enemies on sharp objects, he can slash and tear them in-half and if time is of the essence he had throw them off high ledges or dispatch them to a choppy end with helicopter blades or ventilation fans. You can even push a bad guys shot gun under his chin and force him to pull the trigger, splat!

As experience points are earned new attacks become unlockable. These new attacks can then be chained together with the foundation ones that not only provide you with an immense sense of satisfaction on completion but slash and slice your enemy into a non-recognizable pile of gore. Fury attacks are special powered attacks that can be unlocked and require rage to execute that builds up with each new kill. Each attack is accompanied by streams of blood that spray onto the camera and surrounding environment and every now and then, an instant kill move is displayed in slow motion, as the camera pans around the dying enemy, his blood gushing through the air as a result of claw meeting flesh, all ending in death and a ferocious roar.

Mutagens that are collected through out the levels can be used to customize Wolverines abilities but regardless of what I had equipped I never noticed much difference in the devastation of his slashes. There are also bits and bobs to be found that boost experience points and your health gauge like grabbing the dog tags off of fallen soldiers. Hidden comic book styled Wolverine figurines can also be found that unlock bonus levels and extra costumes.

The game will take you on an adventure through a variety of environments; the jungles of Africa, the snow covered mountains of Alkali Lake as well the hidden Weapon X bade. You will fight through the interior and exterior of a lavish casino and of course see the inner workings of the The Island. The environments are destructible in parts but it’s nothing compared to watching Wovlerines body take damage right down to his adamantium skeleton and then heal right up as his regenerative mutant powers kick in.

The story of the game is 90% the same as the movie but plot points are added, which enrich and lengthen it. I watched the movie before I played the game that probably gave me a better understanding of certain events, which where not very well explained in the game. I would recommend watching the movie before playing the game but it’s not essential. I particularity enjoyed the way the story jumped through time from three months ago in Africa to after Wolverines gets his indestructible bones with each jump brought on by a memory or reference to a past event.

You will meet many mutants along the way including; Gambit, the Blob, Sabertooth and you will collaborate with the likes of John Wraith and Raven who, oddly enough are a couple and in the future become the parents of Kurt the mutant with the ability to teleport, seen in the move X-men 2. You will meet some crazy scientists who are feverishly working on a plan to rid the world of mutants and a 50 story tall robot that completely and utterly under estimates you.

X-men Origins: Wolverine is a game that brings back the dark side of Logan that the movies have somehow lost. You’ll see bullets rip the flesh from Wolverines body, which only enrages him more and when you’re done wielding those beautiful adamantium claws, the game will not only leave you on a soaring high but its will put a smile on your face, confirming the Raven have made on of the best movie games to date.

    Nice review, cheers.
I’m still in two minds about this game. My son is a big fan of Wolverine but if I do decide to purchase, it’s going to have to be one of the ‘top shelf’ games such as KZ2, GTAIV etc…. A bit too violent for young eyes methinks.

It’s very bloody, probably a good idea to keep it on the top shelf ;)
