Word of Goo, a great, quirky, 2d physics based puzzeler had celebrated it 1st birthday. In celebration 2D Boy, the games developer are offering the game at what ever price you think it’s worth. It normally goes for $20 but you can pay $0.01 if you wish to.

The deal runs until 19 October and  covers all versions of the game;  Windows, Mac OS, Linux and Wii.  If you are thinking about whether or not you should take advantage of this, don’t, just do it. Word of Goo was one of our top rated games on the Curiousonion podcast and will offer you hours of awesome cuteness. O, did we mention that it has an awesome soundtrack too.

We got news that Firmware v6.00 would be available to download on to your PSP “soon” from the EU Playstation Blog. But we are happy to let you know Firmware 6.00 is now live. Looking at 6.00 you would think this would be a big update for the PSP, well it’s not. Adam from the EU Playstation Blog mentions “This is a minor update” which is a shame.

Looking through the comments of the Blog, it’s either users disappointed that 6.00 should have lots of features. But some comments show praise for the update, some users are saying the XMB now loads faster due to caching the game icons.

Here is the change list:

• Games can now be grouped and displayed in folders based on their expire date under [Game]
• For those of you looking to customize your XMB, a few new colors will be added under the Theme Settings.
• A security patch has been added.
• [Network Update] has been renamed as [System Update].

We look forward to installing this update.

The good folks over at Sony have recently released the latest iteration of the PS3’s firmware. Firmware 3.0 is by all intensive purposes a substantial improvement over the last firmware, its has functionality for dual audio output, it allows you to test your internet connection and while some may argue the point, I think it looks better than ever before but the friends list is  a big step backward.

Functionally the friend’s list is sound, you can view the trophies of friends, create and read messages, add and remove friends. The usability of these features however is not so sound. My first gripe with the friends list is the path you have to take to read a message. First you hit Triangle which brings up a contextual menu, then you have to select read messages, from there you have to figure out which is the newest message and press X on that message. This process un-intuitive and rather arduous. When using the PS3’s XMB, pressing X allows you to enter the highlighted option, it is the main action button on the contoler, why then when a friend is highlighted does pressing X jump to their trophy list and not the message contextual menu?

My guess is that the primary and most common reason for visiting a friends in your list is to see if they are online, then to see what they are playing, send or read a message and finally to see their trophy list. My rework of the usability of a friend would be to switch the function of the Triangle button with the X button. Pressing X will take you to the friends contextual menu and pressing Triangle will display the friends trophies. Then I would modify the order of the messages according to date, newest messages at the top and oldest at the bottom. This would make sense of the order which at times can get really confusing.

The new design of the friends list absolutely confiuzzles me, to call it a step backward is an understatement. It’s more of a step backwards and then off a cliff. Visually it’s horrendous, clearly the designer wanted to make it look Apple-ish but in doing so bastardized it from the rest of the XMB. The two mix together visually like oil and water. It’s is apparent that the first thing that I would do to improve the look of the friends list is drop the ghastly grey box. It’s nice that the designers wanted to unify a friends attributes into one contained compartment but in it’s current execution it doesn’t work and if it must be contained a simple 40% opaque black bounding box would do the job just fine.

In its current state the XMB friends list is usable but it’s not a pleasant experience, Sony have done a great job at improving and adding features to the PS3′s firmware but I feel that now is the time for refinement. They need to look less at adding features and more at improving the gamers experience, especially so when it comes to the XMB friends list.

Naughty dog has always done a great job with PS3 games, but it seems by the reponse it has been receiving from fans  that this is heading to be their greatest IP to date. The hype surrounding Drake and his second journey has gotten so bad now that people have become afraid to watch vids, look at pictures or even follow up on news in fear that it will ruine their experience come launch day.

At Curiousonion like to understand your pain and know that you need to see something. You cant live under a rock while one of the greatest games of 2009 rolls around. So we have included a little vid that shows off Uncharted 2. Dont worry. It doesn’t give anything away but judging from the vid, Uncharted 2 is coming into its own beautifully!

Local S.African gamers are being treated to an awesome day of gaming hosted by X3G and Gamerlobby.net. The Duo have put together a full day of  gaming with the goal being to bring S.African XBL gamers together in one massive community event.

With reviews slowly pouring in from around the globe.  Batman Arkham Asylum is looking to be a serious contender for game of the year.  Currently on Metacritic it is receiving a 91/100 on the XBox 360 and 92/100 on the PS3.

The final trailer was released on Monday in anticipation for the release to be on the 9th of September in S.Africa. Keenest over at ps3za posted up the review scores that the game has reveived both online and in various publications.

We at Curiousonion cannot wait to get hold of the game to throw Batarangs, beat random goons up, sneak around the building, hide on top of Gargoyles and blow walls and stuff up!

It seems that for quite some time, Universal has been planning on doing an Epic movie on the classic game known as Bioshock.

The proccess was put on hold for a while as  Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Carribean fame) jumped ship as he did not want to move out of his home country for an extended period of time.

Universal decided to get Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later fame) to take over the directors chair. It seems that the new director will have to learn to swim very quickly as the expectations for the movie are extremely high already.

Take 2 Interactive has the final say about the director for their game to movie adaptation. So it will be interesting to see what their views are on Mr. Carlos  Fresnadillo.

Ubisoft have released a new Splinter Cell Conviction gameplay trailer that that completely blows the socks off of our feet. The games new direction of not emphasizing stealth is clear in this trailer as we see Sam kicking all kinds of butt, from head smashing to arm locks to big explosions, Sam pulls it off.

The new trailer (seen below) also gives taste of how Sam can use the environment as a weapon as he bangs an enemy’s head into a bathroom mirror and basin. What else can we say? We love it and if do not own an Xbox yet, you have no better reason than to play this game.

The stricken distributers of the Xbox 360 in S.Africa, MI Digital have closed their doors after a long stretch of financial difficulty. AS a result there is currently no official distributer of the Xbox in the country but John Press, Product Marketing Manager for the Xbox has assured us that there will be no disruption to the supply. Microsoft will make use of its other distributors on a temporary basis until a new official Xbox distributer is appointed.

Concerns about Xbox repairs and warrantee’s have also been put to rest as John said the company Powercare will be handling them. Powercare can be reached at xbox360support@powercare.co.za and contacted at 0861 xbox 360 (0861 929 360).
