If you had walked into a store just two years ago (2007) and asked the sales assistant for a copy of Pro Evolution Soccer, he would have first looked at you with a confused look on his face and then recommended Fifa 07, all the while wondering why on earth you would have asked about PES in the first place.

Things are a little different now, with some substantial improvements to the games online action and an eager return to its roots, PES 2010 does it’s absolute best to hold it own against Fifa 2010.

Delving into the gameplay you will quickly notice the that the speed has been slowed down substantially making it feel more like a simulation than its arcade predecessors. Touted as the start light feature in this iteration is the ability to 360-degree dribble which is suppose to make the player feel more in control, it works and shifts the feel of the game into a new space, away from 2009.

Taking a step in the right direction, the developers have added team style and player style cards which allow you to customize settings in up to eight different categories. You can tweak the defensive style and attacking style of your team for instance allowing you to execute your paying strategy right down to the smallest detail. If you are like me and not an adjustment man the good ol’ default settings will work just fine.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 Online and Multiplayer

Konami have flexed all their muscles in the online multiplayer department to build a soccer game that is truly community focused. The game allows a bunch of friends to get together in a party of up to 32 players and play the competitions and tournaments of their choice. Players can choose to play individually or team up and play against other teams, while the game keeps track of individual players performances. It is implemented well and works a charm. This is arguably the best part of the entire game.

Online gaming in PES 2010 has been taking seriously and Konami have streamlined the process from launching to jumping strait into some online multiplayer action. The lag which was one of the drowning factors of PES 2009 has been substantially improved. However, living on the tip of the world, like us in South Africa is not going to help with the lag and online matches should be kept local whenever possible.

The games graphics have been notability taken up a notch and dare I say that it looks ever so slightly better than Fifa 2010. The environmental effects are spot on and in rainy games it’s becomes a pleasure to watch the little splashes that the ball makes with it hits the turf. The game menus look great and navigating through its many options is smooth and slick.

The footballers are extremely well modeled and look very realistic close up, Konami’s team have done a great job of transferring the real life players likeness into the characters that we see running around the screen. This likeness is not limited to visuals, each player in the game behaves just as he would in real life with the example of Rooney, who likes to run back and help with defense when it’s needed.

The good however does come with the bad. The games animations are rather stinted and have not been improved much from the previous generations bad animations.

The commentary is so repetitive and off the mark that at some point while playing the game, most players will curse at it’s sloppiness and wonder why developers never added more than the seemingly five line range they included.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 Conclusion

If you’ve been a fan of the franchise you will enjoy the game but if you’ve been feeling frustrated with it, it might be a good time to move on to the competition. PES 2010 has seen improvements made to it but they are not enough to warrant it as your first choice. If Konami continue their efforts to make improvements to the game, perhaps, one day they will regain the crown of best soccer game hands down.

Hogwarts sounds like a fun and very interesting place. Lots of action has taken place over the years with tones of magic being put to use all over the place, it just sounds great.  With the Nintendo Wii and the new Hatty Potter game I feel like I could actually be at Hogwarts?

The Nintendo Wii is not my main console. I am usually on my Playstation 3 with my Dualshock 3 controller. So the good thing about this, I don’t really need to learn any new controls, since the Wii remote and Nunchuk is all motion based. I see a lot of advantage for Harry Potter on the Wii due to the fact most things on Harry Potter is magic, so you have your wand on the game but it also feels like you have a wand outside of the game to. So for example when creating a potion I feel like I am creating a potion due to turning my Wii remote like a wooden spoon. This is exciting because it feels like you are taking part. The last timeI have played a Harry Potter game, it just did not feel the same as I was pressing buttons to make the potion.

Not seeing the latest Harry Potter movie I started with the game. You begin with some training. This gets you used to the controls and how to cast spells etc. So you start off testing your flying, this is pretty easy to get the hang of. You turn your Wii remote left to go left and your Wii remote right to go right, the flying is done for you. The main point of flying of course is Quidditch which I will talk about later. The next thing you are asked to do is clear some cauldrons from Ron Weasley’s garden before his mum gets back. So you select the one of the cauldrons by moving your Wii remote over the cauldron and pressing A which selects the cauldron, you then flick your Wii remote down and then up to cast Wingardium Leviosa, this makes the cauldron float in mid air you then need to throw it into the lake by moving your stick on the Nunchuk controller and flick the Wii remote to throw it. This is a good little practise session, gets you use to the controllers of casting a spell and controlling items in the air.

Throughout the game there are 150 Hogwarts Crests to collect; these are everywhere, some in tricky places and some in easy places. If you want a challenge I am sure you have one here to find them all. These crests give you rewards when you after you collect a few of them, for example after you collect 3 you get “Two player duelling pack 1”. So the more you collect the better the rewards get. There are also mini-crests hiding in glowing circle objects. So lights etc. Once you collect enough mini-crests, you gain a Hogwarts Crest. Other little rewards you get during the game are badges. You can earn them by doing things like First potion etc.

During most games, I get lost or just need a helping hand for a puzzle for example. Well in Harry Potter if you press – you get help from Nearly Headless Nick. This is your map for the game, at anytime you need to know where anything is or just need some help; Nick will show you the way to go. This is handy for solving puzzles during the game which can be tricky at times. I used Nick the most to show me which way to go, like to the Potions club for example.

One of the main things I was looking forward to trying out on this game was the potion making. I went to a potions lesson and you jump straight into it. You have your ingredients on the table with you, your cauldron pot and yourself. Down the right hand side it shows you what next ingredient you need and how much time you have left. If you successfully get the right amount of ingredients you have been asked to put in, your timer will go up. If you put too much in it will smoke out the area which you then have to shake your Nunchuk stick to clear the smoke. So you have to be careful. Once you have selected you ingredient you lift it up and pour it into the cauldron, just like you would if doing it in real life. This was the bit I found exciting as you are controlling that flow of potion coming down, need it to slow down well then just lift up your hand a tiny bit. Once the potion has been made you then get graded on how you had done. You get a chart with how many goods you got how many greats. It then totals it up and you can see how you done. You can then go around Hogwarts and look at notice boards in the Potions club and learn new Potions and try them out.

During the game you join the duelling club; I was excited about this but in the end I just got fed up with it. I found it to repetitive so I just found myself throwing the same spell over and over again, I just found myself saying next. It was a bit of a challenge but not enough to stop me in my tracks. I had other moves to use which I did now and then, but I just used pretty much the default move throughout every duelling match.

Duelling works like this, you have opponent who is challenging you. This can be from another house or the same one as you, the objective is to win the duel which I had really no problem doing. You also have dark lords to fight with duelling and when running to the next mission you can sometimes be stopped by a student saying let us duel, but I found this to be very rare. Just like the potions notice board, duelling also has one of these so if you fancy a challenge with another house member, you can go to these notice boards. During the game you also get to upgrade to new moves for example, one I unlocked during my play through was “Levicorpus” this makes the opponent float in the air for a few seconds and I have a chance to attack them as much as I like. I used this about 3 times during the game.

Quidditch is obviously a big part of Harry Potter and I was looking forward to trying it out. It is very easy to use with it being fun in parts and then quite boring in other parts. The objective is to catch the snitch; the way you do this is by using your Wii remote. You turn left for left and right for right, the rest of the flying is done for you. It is like the duelling problem again, I never really failed it just seemed a bit too easy.  You have to fly through stars that have a time limit on them. When they are green they are fine, if they are red you need pass through them to build time. You know when you are behind the time limit as your screen goes dark and you hear a heart beat sound.

“The cut-scenes are interesting and look good”

The loading time in this game, I found to be very good. You have a long but not too long load at the start but then it is pretty much stream less from then on. The only time I would notice that the game was loading was when it went to a cut scene or through a portrait on the stairs.

Harry Potter was graphically good for the Wii. I was rather shocked, I thought I was going to be in for a laugh but they have done a great job. Even if the graphics were bad I am more a game play person, so I would not have minded about this. The characters faces looked good, I noticed a bit of lip-syncing not going on now and then but it was not something that stopped me playing the game. The game play is good, it felt a bit odd now and then but I am not sure if that was I being a novice to the Wii or the game itself. One of the problems I did find was when you hold Z to sprint then turn to go through a door; I usually had to stop completely then walk through the door and continue running. I see this as a small issue not a big problem. I found controlling the wand easy, now and then, it picked up the wrong spell but it was not very often.

When starting Harry Potter I thought I would only be controlling Harry, well I was wrong, as I had to control two other characters through the game to which I thought was a nice touch to the game. I found the game quite short, well the story as you could go around the hole of Hogwarts and find the crests in the game. This would keep you busy for some time. During the story, it goes from day to night, which could be a pain when trying to find the crests. Once you have completed the story mode you unlock an all day mode so you can continue searching in the day for your crests.

Overall, I found Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince a better game than I thought it was going to be. If you like Harry Potter or just like using the motion side of games for the Wii then you will like this game. I like the fact most of the stuff in Harry Potter is motion based, so you feel like you are controlling that character, this works well for the game and the Wii.

Call it ignorance of showbiz media or the lack of enthusiasm and interest for pop music, but the name Hannah Montana was only revealed to me recently when I heard of how her game would significantly boost my dwindling trophy collection. When the game arrived through my door, I greeted it with open arms in the hope for something to entice me away from the onslaught of third person shooters I’m currently working my way through.

Thankfully not a bullet casing or bald protagonist is in sight but instead a teenage pop star born and bred from the “Deep South” lunges onto the main menu encompassing bright colours, cheesy grins and what can only be described as a gear-grinding attempt at a “catchy tune”. A little investigation later, and I find the title for the song is ‘Best of Both Worlds’. Make of it what you will, but for a self confessed indie music fiend, it’s not exactly my cup of tea. If however, your head is bopping up and down and that left foot of yours is tapping away, then you’ll be pleasantly pleased to hear the songs only get – “better”.

As expected by the title of the game, the main focus throughout is music. The way it’s been approached in this game isn’t to include microphone support (which I was really quite surprised by) but instead you take stage and get involved with a selection of performance tasks like; dancing, crowd actions and taking control of the musical instruments; guitar, keyboard and drums. I’ll admit, at first the general concept of this threw me off balance and despite manic attempts to get something classed as a half-decent score, I was hindered thanks to some of the worst incorporation of six-axis seen in a PlayStation3 game to date and my attempts were short lived then quickly summed up to nothing more than annoyance.

Allow me to picture the scene. You’re the infamous Hannah, stood centre stage in front of a huge crowd (of poorly detailed 2D sprites) ready to perform your heart out. It starts of simple with a few postures locked to the analogue sticks which are then followed up by a manic dash around the stage where you begin to ‘wow’ the crowd with different mimic actions like drum roll or finger-waving. Actions like these are split between analogue control and the limp-wrist creating six-axis where the words ‘precise’ and ‘controls’ have never been further apart. It’s nothing more than a case of waving your control pad around as though you were hailing a taxi whilst in a massive hurry – like trying to escape this God awful game.

The musical instruments are all ‘blessed’ with some defect apart from the guitar which was fairly easy to jam with – more so considering it has three strings. The keyboard is a challenge of tilting the controller from left to right in the hope you hit a few of the cascading notes whilst drums are a mad dash with the analogue stick. The actions aren’t particularly hard but the sounds they create are completely out of place with the backing music…and to think, I thought the music couldn’t get any worse.

Aside from the fun of prancing on the variety of stages, you are able to take foot in a small selection of locales where you’ll make haste with the bland and sterile story as well as have some fun with the included mini-games. ‘The Fairground’ has a few stalls such as ‘Bottle Toss’, ‘Frog Hop’ and ‘Horse Races’ all of which equate to uninspiring time-wasters. The horse riding at ‘The Farm’ however is fairly enjoyable where you saddle up and race down a mini meadow jumping obstacles along the way. The gameplay here is actually quite good (compared to the rest of the game) but is spoilt by the stereotypical embodiment of someone from the South yelling “Yee-haw” and “Darn” at every opportunity which is especially odd when you realise that through 80% of the game mouth movement is absent, even during conversation based cutscenes.

Maybe I’m being too harsh on this title. Hannah Montana: The Movie Game could certainly be much worse so if you have an 8 year old daughter/niece/sister and are looking for the perfect gift, then buy her a horse this game. If you’re a trophy fiend, then give it a rent. It clearly wasn’t created for a gamer like myself and unless mummy or daddy are reading this review to you, then it probably won’t be anything up your proverbial street either.

When I first received this title from EA I must admit that I was a little apprehensive about the genre of the game as it’s one of the last that I rush out and buy. I started my journey of entering the Wii gaming experience and it was a funny one at that. First I put the disc in upside down but once I had conquered that obstacle I was on my way to Wii gaming heaven. Unfortunately we did not have the Wii MotionPlus for this review so I was unable to comment on how it effected the game.

When you start your career their is the option to create your golfer, you can kit him out with all the golfing kit wear that your heart desires and some fancy footwear too, there was plenty of  other options to edit, like hair style , hair colour, scars but I pretty much stuck to the default as I was to excited to get out on the the fairway.

Next up  their was a tutorial to get you up to speed on how to play the game which includes the likes of  Enhanced Draw Fade, Precision Putting, Spin and more.

After I got passed all that had to be done I was really excited to get going when disaster struck. My Wii remote batteries died on me now this is something I’m not used to batteries and joypads because being  mainly a PS3 gamer I was used to using rechargeable perhipals so began the task of finding more. Luckily I had just returned home from holiday and had some spare.

Finally I was on the course looking down the fairway and stepped up to the tee , I was on my way now! This was a whole new gaming experience for me and I stuck to the default control system and after a couple of  holes I was beginning to get a bit frustrated as I wasn’t able to get the putting right so up stepped Hank Haney, Tiger’s coach  to assist me and begun using the tips he advised me on. I had to change my putting style from Classic Putting to Precision Putting which I did and finally I wasn’t getting Triple Bogey’s!!

I was still struggling with getting to the hole and once again Handy Hank Haney came to my rescue and advised me to change to All Play mode which basically give you a visual projected view of your shot and where it should land which to a complete newbie to this game was really handy.

I completed my first round of career mode which I came 36th place and +7 which coming from a golfing family my father would have been ashamed of me but now with the adjustments to the controls to suit me. I begun my assault on the next course and things begun to turn around when I was getting Pars, Birdies and even came close to a Eagle, which I missed but had me screaming at the TV as it rolled agonisingly past the hole.

I was enjoying myself and the game. I loved the way, when you hit a good shot from off the green and it was going to be close to the hole, the game would slow down, you would hear your heart beating (from the TV) and feel it beating in your hand via the Wii remotes vibration.

Graphically speaking, the game is not on Par with the Xbox 360 or PS3 but this is to be obviously expected for me it was not about the graphics but the truly awesome game play that I’ve never experienced  and will be looking to get a game with the brother-in-law as he keeps on harping on about how he would kick my butt at Tiger Woods.

As you may have already gathered this was my first Wii game I had properly played and EA have left me wanting more , Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 really delivers the goods with this game and as for a belated newcomer to Wii gaming I really enjoyed the game.

This truly is the ultimate experience of playing golf without having to leave the comfort of your own home, battle against the harsh weather conditions (but you do get real-time weather courtesy of the Forecast Channel included ) and as many of you know no early morning starts in the cold.

This is a must have game for all Wii golfing fans out there and I highly recommend Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10.

Nintendo decided to wait after their E3 2009 conference to announce a new colour for the Wii System. The new, elegant in black Wii will release in Japan August 1 and in addition, accessories like the Wiimote and Classic Controller will also be made available in black, which will please all the colour co-ordinating peeps out there.

After an exciting day at the 2009 E3 which was jam packed with great new things, we take a look at what the highlights have been for us.

Sony

PSP Go – made it debut during the Sony conference, coming in a 40% smaller and 50: lighter than the PS3 3000. The Go will not have a UMD drive and boast 16gb flash memory, Bluetooth compatibility as well as new PC software called Media GO. No mention of equivalent Mac software.

New games arriving to the PSP include; Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Motorstorm: Arctic Edge and LittleBigPlanet.

MAG – Sony showed off a live demo with 256 players from around the world in one game. Every time we see MAG it looks better and better and the only question that still lingers in our minds; Is Sony going to stick with that ultra descriptive name?

Final Fantasy XIV – is going to be a PS3 exclusive. A trailer hinted that the next chapter in this epic story will take players online.

Modnation Racers – sticks with the LittleBigPlanet theme of “Play, Create, Share”. It’s a cute racer that will allow players to customise racetracks, cars and racers. It’s not going to blow your socks off with realism but the fun levels will certainly be through the roof.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves – was discussed by Naughty Dog representatives where they revealed that the multiplayer beta will begin tonight. We have our codes and we are locked and loaded to take it for a spin. Be sure to check back here for our preview.

Sony’s Motion Controller – While still in its prototype phase the demonstration was very impressive. It showed the Sony representative swinging it around while it was being tracked and displayed on screen. His image was picked up by a PS Camera and projected onto the screen with different objects like a sword, bat and whip composed in the place of the controller.

Assasins Creed 2 – was demoed live, showed off some very sneaky execution techniques that we’ve all come to love Altier, erm, Ezio for. The demo ended with Ezio diving into a canal, which we can only guess means that in the sequel, our famed assassin can swim.

God of War III – Sony ended their conference with some live gameplay of this hugely anticipated game, which included many massive boss fights, stunning visuals and amazing effects. The game launched date was pushed back to March 1o 2010 much to our disappointment.

Wii MotionPlus – is a little device that plugs into your main Nintendo Wii controller that is even more precise in tracking your movement and can also track your movement in a 3d space.

Wii Sports Resort – With the Wii MotionPlus Wii Sports resort will supposedly be more fun, we beg to differ. Not that we have actually played it, so it “might” be really great…

Wii Fit Plus – The original Wii fit has sold literally millions of units and to be fair it is one of the Nintendo’s best accessories. Wii ~Fit Plus adds a load of new features for fighting the flab in your front room. You can also get this without a Wii fit board if you already have one

Wii Vitality Sensor – is like a heart / pulse monitor for your Wii, but to be honest isn’t this taking it a little bit too far?

Nintendo also highlighted a load of new games which included, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Metroid, Sin and Punishment 2, Endless Ocean 2, Line Attack Heroes, Span Smasher.

I’ll be honist here its more than likely that we won’t be mentining these games ever again as they all look utterly riviting…

Another interesting and exciting day has passed at E3 2009 and we got to feast our eyes on a bunch of stuff from the Sony and Nintendo conferences. We were particularly excited to see the Heavy Rain and God of War 3 trailers as well as , Sony’s 256 multiplayer game, MAG which is looking great.

We’ve also included a video of Sony’s new motion controller seen for the first time. From the looks of it, it appears to work rather well and will probably be launched in tandem with a law team to handle the inevitable influx of law suites agenised Sony because of motion controller related injuries.

Capcom are to showcase their latest Games for the public to try out at the GameOn! London event which will be  held on 20-21st June at London’s Olympia exhibition halls .

Capcoms line up will include ;

Ever since Nintendo announced they would be Wii-making Gamecube titles, rumours have been going around that Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes would also be remade and released as a trilogy. Well, according to kotaku these rumours were true all along.

Metroid Prime was already released for the Wii in Japan and Echoes is set for release later the year. US gamers however, and hopefully us, will be getting both these titles along with Metroid Prime 3: Corruption all bundled on a single disc and released as a trilogy. This of course is great news for anyone who’s played Corruption but never got to play the original two titles.

According to our source, the controls for both the remade Metroid Prime games were adopted from Curruption and will all support widescreen as well as 480p. Regarding the actual games it seems as if, apart from a few graphical and loading improvements, they’ve been left mostly unchanged: great news since these were both brilliant titles to begin with.

We are eagerly awaiting the coming of the trilogy as it has been far too long since we’ve explored the remains of Tallon IV, killed space pirates and experienced the unique atmosphere the games are know for. Especially when three modern-day classics such as these are bundled and sold for the price of one, it’s hard to resist the edging of your cursor towards the buy button. The trilogy will be released on August 24 of this year.
